We’re shimmying into the weekend with a spotlight on Berlin-based DJ Marie-Christin Sauerbrei, or Marycherry as she’s known behind the decks. The friend who couldn’t resist taking over the playlist at parties (hard relate), Marie was encouraged to start DJ’ing professionally by friends and has never looked back. Now she’s bringing vintage flair to bars across Berlin and Paris, presents the Groovy Cherry Show on ALEX Berlin, and is a member of FLINTA* DJ collective Sonic Sisters Society.
Tell us a little bit about yourself:
I’m Marie aka Marycherry, living between Paris and Berlin and a DJ, vinyl collector, event promoter and radio host. I travel the world to make people dance and share my love for Rock’n’Roll.
What sparked your interest in collecting records?
I always loved vintage from a young age – clothing, furniture and records. I’m excited about it as there is a history in each found and collected item: who owned it before, where did it travel in time and how it ended up getting to me.

What is it about vinyl that you love most?
I think it’s a world I feel safe in, where I can deeply feel emotions and dive in with my mind while listening to it, with a coffee in the morning or a glass of wine in the evening. It’s magical and creates some sort of escape for me. Almost like sound therapy!
When did you start DJ’ing, and what got you behind the decks?
I started six years ago, when I still lived permanently in Paris. I was the one annoying person in my friend group that would always change music at parties, so they pushed me to start DJ’ing, and I did – at my friends bar Pigalle Country Club and the rest is history.
“Keep believing in yourself no matter what happens”

What can we expect from one of your sets?
It’s usually wild and very danceable – I love to give people a good time!
What advice would you give someone wanting to try vinyl DJ’ing?
I’d say never give up and keep believing in yourself no matter what happens. I think if you want something to happen it will if you work hard enough for it.

What’s the most prized record in your collection, and is there a story behind it?
It’s a French record from the 1960s called Rouge Rouge by Christie Laume. It’s a special record to me because it’s hard to find and I searched years to finally own it.
I was initially starting to collect records in Paris and came across a lot of French music from the 60s and this song – this is why it’s special to me, the whole memory of my past life in Paris is attached to it.
What’s your go-to crate digging spot?
I think it’s anywhere I go – I love to look for records on trips, those are the best and most surprising ones usually, also because I find a lot of local music I wouldn’t find back home. For more precise research I go to Discogs.
