Keeping the beat alive with content creator and Beatles obsessive Skylar Moody

This week, we’re catching up with Skylar Moody, content creator and passionate Beatles fan, to talk about how her love of the Fab Four set her on a path toward journalism, fandom, and record collecting.

In our chat, Skylar shares the story of her most prized Beatles find, the other artists filling out her shelves (hello, Oasis and Queen!), and why vinyl gives her goosebumps. She also opens up about the role Gen Z can play in carrying the Beatles’ legacy forward, and the kind of impact she hopes her own work can have on the wider music community.

Tell us a little about yourself…

I’m a content creator in love with all things music! I’m primarily focused on The Beatles, but I enjoy many artists in the rock genre and love creating videos that resonate with different fandoms. Many of my teenage years were spent engaging with fans online – it’s an awesome experience to find others your age around the world that are just as obsessed! I’m passionate about Gen Z carrying on that love and legacy, because we’re responsible for keeping the beat going.

Outside of content creation, I work in marketing full time and also enjoy writing, photography, traveling and of course vinyl collecting!

“Everything always circles back to the boys, whether I want it to or not”

When did you first discover The Beatles, and how did that spark such a lifelong passion?

I took a music history class in high school where my teacher had us watch A Hard Day’s Night. I had NO idea they were in any movies, so their personalities instantly got me hooked. From then on, I dove into their music and learned every bit of history I could – and look where we are now!

What is it about their music and story that continues to resonate so strongly with you?

They are TIMELESS! Nearly every musician I’ve gotten into since The Beatles has made some reference to them as an inspiration, or they have stories which overlap. At the same time, seeing so many younger fans emerging – some as musicians themselves – because of the impact of The Beatles’ music. Everything always circles back to the boys, whether I want it to or not. This goes to show how powerful they are, they’re not an “overrated boy band” as many like to call them.

What role do you see yourself playing in keeping their legacy alive for future generations?

I’d love to continue creating videos to inspire others to share their passion. On a bigger scale, I’d love to get involved with professional video production, radio, etc. to share that love with a greater audience.

Let’s talk vinyl: What’s the crown jewel of your Beatles collection, and is there a story behind how you found it?

At The Fest for Beatles Fans in Chicago this year, I was skimming through 45’s and ended up finding a picture disc of the butcher cover! I have yet to own the full LP since they’re usually priced so high, so I’m settling with this for now. The vendors there always have a great selection, even going beyond The Beatles.

What other artists or genres do you collect on vinyl?

Currently, I’m VERY into Oasis! I’ve picked up ‘What’s The Story Morning Glory?’, ‘The Masterplan’ and ‘Don’t Believe the Truth.’ I LOVE how Beatle-esque their music is. I also love Queen, Mötley Crüe, Elton John, Bob Dylan…the list goes on! If I see an album by one of my favourite artists that isn’t part of my collection, I’ll pick it up for the right price.

Why do you think vinyl continues to play such a big role in how we connect with music history?

It’s a reminder of how far we’ve evolved in the music industry and how we’ll always find our way back to the beginning. We’re spoiled with streaming, but when you become interested in an artist/group of another era, you want to become completely immersed. And if that means getting your hands on a record, listening to the crackling, the muffled voices coming through the speakers…it gives you goosebumps! You feel like a first generation fan in an instant.

Finally, what’s a record you think everyone should own, or at least hear once in their life, and why?

I’d have to go with the classic answer of ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.’ It was a major gateway for me getting into the band, so I imagine it can play that same role for those who are curious. It’s a fun journey to listen along to – a band trying to break into a new image with lots of experimentation (in more ways than one…)

Keep up with Skylar’s work over on Instagram.
